Original post:

A waterline replacement project by the City of Durham will affect traffic on West Chapel Hill Street and South Buchanan Boulevard over the next nine months.

Beginning Jan. 21, construction on the waterline begins on West Chapel Hill Street between Kent Street and South Buchanan Boulevard. Crews are expected to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The work along Chapel Hill Street will continue through March and require the city to close on-street parking on eastbound lanes near the Durham Co-op Market and The Cookery. The center turn lane will also be closed during construction. Traffic will be maintained in both directions. In the event of lane closures, crews will be in place to direct traffic.

The West Chapel Hill Street phase is part of an overall project by the city’s Department of Water Management to improve existing water infrastructure on Buchanan Boulevard from Peabody to West Chapel Hill, along West Chapel Hill from Kent to William Vickers, and along Shepherd Street from West Chapel Hill to Jackson.

Crews are expected to start replacing the waterline on South Buchanan Boulevard beginning in April. Work will continue northward on the road and is estimated to reach the area around Smith Warehouse in May or June.

Access to Maxwell Avenue is expected to remain open during construction on South Buchanan Boulevard. Other updates will be posted here as the start date for this section draws closer.

Additional information about the waterline replacement project is available on the City of Durham website. The project is expected to be completed by July 2019.
