Over winter break, a handful of construction and utility projects will hit high gear, affecting the flow of traffic on parts of West Campus.

If you’re headed to campus, here’s what you need to know.

Towerview Road and Wannamaker Drive

The traffic circle at Towerview Road and Wannamaker Drive.

What’s happening: Starting Nov. 30, Towerview Road will be closed between the Card Gym parking lot entrance and the Hollows, and Wannamaker Drive will be closed between the Sheffield Tennis Center and Keohane Quad for repaving and curb and sidewalk replacement. The work is a continuation of the project that had the stretch of Towerview Road in front of the Hollows Quad closed for much of the summer.

What to expect: Parking lots near the work are unaffected. The Card Gym lot will remain open and will be accessible from Towerview Road coming from Science Drive. The Blue Zone lots will also remain open and can be accessed from Wannamaker Drive from Duke University Road.

Expected completion: January 8, 2021

Flowers DriveFlowers Drive at Duke.

What’s happening: The first phase of a water line replacement project will affect access to the Allen Building parking lot during installation of three crosswalks that will temporarily close small segments of Flowers Drive. Between January 1 and January 15, Flowers Drive between Erwin Road and Yearby Avenue will be down to one lane for a repaving project. Flowers Drive will be open only to traffic heading south from Erwin Drive to Yearby Avenue.

What to expect: The water line replacement project will close the entrance to the upper portion of the Allen Building parking lot and require closing 70 parking spaces.

The crosswalk installations will close Flowers Drive to thru traffic between the Chapel Drive traffic circle and Trent Drive periodically from Nov. 30  to December 18. Access to the Allen Building parking lot and the entrance to Duke Employee Occupational Health and Wellness won’t be affected.

During the January repaving project, access to the Duke Health COVID testing tent near Flowers Drive will be unaffected.

Expected completion: January 15, 2021
