A Duke Workday: Meet the Captain Powering Duke’s Ocean Research
Brantley Acree takes you on the water and behind the scenes at Duke University Marine Lab
Each video in “A Duke Workday” series connects you with a staff and faculty member who shares and represents the Duke values of respect, trust, inclusion, discovery and excellence. Is there a colleague you would like for us to highlight in “A Duke Workday?” Let us know.
Brantley Acree, Marine Mate II at the Duke University Marine Lab, grew up in the rolling mountains of Roanoke, Virginia. Each year, Acree and his family were able to spend a portion of their time away from work and school in the Beaufort area. This exposure to the coast and the marine life that inhabits it left an indelible mark on Acree that still impacts his life today.
"The diversity of life here is incredible. It's just a really special, amazing place. I feel lucky to be here,” Acree said.
In his role, Acree is in charge of all the boats and dock spaces at the Duke University Marine Lab. This includes captaining boats during research trips which can sometimes require the crew to be out at sea for 30 days at a time.
Watch this video to learn more about Acree and what life is like as the captain of a 77-foot research vessel.
