Nancy Allen's Photos of Person County

Professor's work on exhibit during April

"Where I've Been" is one of the photos of Person County in the Nancy Allen's exhibit.

‘Scenes of Person County', a collection of more than 40 black-and-white photographs of rural Person County by Duke professor and vice provost Dr. Nancy Bates Allen will be on display at the Kirby Gallery in Roxboro during the month of April. A reception for the artist is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

At the heart of this show are nine black-and-white prints on loan from the Specialty Clinic at Person Memorial Hospital. The images were captured one Saturday morning on a 120-mile driving tour of the county. Allen photographed the landscape, history and character of the county churches, barns, tobacco carts, railroad tracks, Mayo Reservoir, Roxboro Motor Speedway sign and more.

Over the past two years, Allen added to this collection with other images from the back roads of this beautiful county.

Allen is a long-time Duke faculty member in the Department of Medicine and a former chair of the Academic Council. She currently also services as vice provost for faculty diversity and development.

Allen's father, Paul Bates, is an accomplished nature photographer living in Virginia. Her first show, "Four Seasons on the Flat River", was held at the Kirby Gallery in Roxboro in April, 2006.

The Kirby Gallery is located in downtown Roxboro at 213 North Main Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 336-597-1709.
