Second winner is named as #DukeTimeOff finishes fourth week

It took a while for Samantha Shaltz and her husband Brad to get their drone positioned perfectly to capture a photo of the couple on a cluster of rocks in the middle of Falls Lake. Once in place, the drone captured the essence of a relaxing day on the water.

The shot makes Shaltz, a lab research analyst in Duke’s Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, the second Duke employee to win a prize in the #DukeTimeOff photo contest.

“Time off is important to me because it allows me to get away from the stresses of life,” says Shaltz, who took home a beach prize pack (Duke towel, frisbee and water bottle) courtesy of Duke University Stores. “I don’t even need to go that far to have fun and relax.”

Submissions continue to roll in as staff and faculty highlight hobbies, adventures and summer fun in the #DukeTimeOff campaign. To win prizes, such as a stay at the JB Duke Hotel, photos must be taken and shared between May 26, 2017 and Aug, 11, 2017 by current University and Health System employees. Entry deadline is Aug. 11.

Here’s a look at some shots as the fourth week finished.

Patti Silver poses next to a bear statue covered in pennies.
Patti Silver, a staff specialist with Duke University Stores, explored New Bern with her daughter, Tiffany, who was celebrating her 31st birthday in early June. The pair found 30 of the 50 bear statues scattered around the city, including this one, which was covered in pennies.

“It was just the two of us,” Silver wrote. “We had a map of all the bears. We walked to 25 downtown and drove to five others, including the penny one, which I had been wanting to see for the last few visits but had not found. … The weekend was all about making memories and just enjoying life.”

Melissa Hill's children pose in front of the Washington Monument.
On Flag Day, clinical social worker Melissa Hill and her family went to Washington D.C. Her three children, Theo, Lucy and Annie especially enjoyed the adventure.

Among the sights the family saw were the Washington Monument, the White House, the World War II Memorial, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum.

“We clocked almost seven miles on our feet and we are SO tired,” Hill wrote.

“We can’t wait to go back!” she added.

Priscilla Stephens with her husband at White Lake.
June 3 was a busy day for Priscilla Stephens, an administrative coordinator for Duke’s Department of Neurosurgery. Surrounded by family at White Lake, she married Logan Graham, whom she’d met at a cookout nearly three years ago. She passed along this image of the pair enjoying their first sunset as a married couple.

“This was a moment we took together after all of the hoopla to enjoy one another and enjoy the beautiful view,” she wrote.
