Rebecca Wilgus and her 11-year-old son, Ryan, always arrives early to the North Carolina Symphony’s Summerfest Series.

After they grab space on the lawn, they head toward the stage for a closer look at the symphony’s instruments. The musicians’ instruments are on display before most shows in the Summerfest Series, which features 11 concerts held from May 26 to July 21 at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary.

“It’s a great way to introduce kids to different types of instruments and music,” said Wilgus, informatics project leader for Duke Clinical Research Institute. “There’s something for everybody at the symphony.”

For Summerfest 2018, Duke employees receive a 25 percent discount on single tickets, as well as special “Flex” packages that include four, 10 and 12 general admission lawn tickets that can be used in any combination this season and include parking passes.

Summerfest opens Saturday, May 26, with a performance of composer Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Other highlights include “Superheroes Save Summerfest” on June 2; Blind Boys of Alabama on June 9 and “The Music of Tom Petty” on July 14.

Single lawn tickets range from $22-$27 with the discount. The package deals range from $85.80-$225.23.

In addition to Summerfest, you can save about $15 on tickets to the symphony’s performances of “Amadeus LIVE” on June 7-8. The full orchestra and choir will perform Mozart’s most celebrated works while the Academy Award-winning movie, “Amadeus,” plays on a vast HD screen.

Wilgus plans to buy one of the package “Flex” deals for her family.

“I would encourage anybody to attend one of the symphony’s concerts,” she said. “The quality of music is great, and I can get a little discount from Duke to enjoy it. It all rolls up together for a great experience.”
