For Crime Prevention Month in October, all Duke staff, faculty and students are invited to participate in a LiveSafe mobile app contest for a chance at Amazon card prizes.

The campaign begins today (Wednesday, Oct. 16) and ends at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21.

Here’s how to participate:

Got the LiveSafe app? Find friends or colleagues at Duke who does not currently have the app and ask them to download the app before 5 p.m. Oct. 21.

Don’t have the app? Not a problem. You can still participate if you download the app first.

To be eligible for prizes, the new user must go into the app after downloading it for the first time and enter the contest via the “Refer a Friend” tip by typing in the referrer’s first and last name in the message field before 5 p.m. Oct. 21. Hint: find the “refer a friend” icon – the one with three people – by selecting “report incident” in the app. (If you don't see the "Refer a Friend" icon when you open the app, close the app or refresh it.)

Open the app, go to Report Incident, select that card and then look for the Refer a Friend icon and submit the referring person's full name. How to win? All individuals who refer a Duke friend or colleague – as well as the new users – will be entered in a drawing for an Amazon card. A $100 Amazon card will be given to one randomly selected student and one employee who download the LiveSafe app for the first time; another $100 Amazon card will be given to one randomly selected student and one employee who refers a new download. We’ll also award an extra $100 Amazon card to the Duke community member who makes the most referrals resulting in new downloads of the LiveSafe mobile app. New users are permitted to refer people too.

Remember, to be eligible for a prize, the referral must result in a new download of the app by the user.

Why you want to download the app: Play an active role in keeping Duke safe. The LiveSafe app, available at no charge to Duke staff and faculty, is offered for Apple and Android devices. Among the features, the app allows community members to submit messages about incidents to Duke Police 24/7 with the touch of a button. The app also allows family or friends to virtually escort you to your destination on a real-time map. And you can request a Duke Van and track campus buses with the app.

Stay tuned for the winner announcement the week of Oct. 28.
